Inside Electrical
The Area II Inside Electrical apprenticeship program is a 4-year course that combines hands-on apprenticeship and classroom instruction at the IETC in Salem, OR. The goal is to prepare students to obtain a General Journeyman License.
As an Inside Electrician, you’ll work in various sites from residential homes to modern industrial plants.
Inside Electrician Responsibilities:
- Wire up lighting systems, switches, converters, and computer systems
- Maintain and repair heavy-duty motors
- Inspect electrical elements including circuit breakers and transformers
Limited Residential
The Area II Limited Residential Electrician apprenticeship program is a 2-year course comprised of classroom lessons at the IETC in Salem, OR, and supervised on-the-job learning.
Graduates of this program are eligible for a Limited Residential Electrical License. This allows operating on one, two-family, or multi-family dwellings that don’t exceed three floors above grade.
Limited Residential Electrician Duties:
- Setting up power and lighting systems in homes
- Repairing and maintaining existing systems

How much can I earn?
INSIDE ELECTRICAL
As an entry-level Inside Electrical apprentice, you will earn a minimum of $17.23 per hour. As you progress through the program your wage will increase and after your first year in the program, you may be earning $23.69 per hour. On average, an inside electrician earns around $43.07 per hour, amounting to approximately $89,586 per year.
LIMITED RESIDENTIAL
As an entry-level Limited Residential apprentice, you will earn a minimum of $20.99 per hour. As you progress through the program your wage will increase and after your first year in the program, you may be earning $28.63 per hour. On average, a limited residential electrician earns around $38.17 per hour, amounting to approximately $79,394 per year.
How do I receive my on-the-job training?
As a registered apprentice, your primary focus will be on gaining essential practical skills. You’ll work under the direct guidance and supervision of licensed journey worker electricians.
This on-the-job training is facilitated by employers, who have been approved by the Area II Inside Electrical Committee and registered as training agents with the Bureau of Labor & Industries. All of Area II’s training agents are committed to providing industry-standard training and supervision.

Training agents have offices located throughout the counties listed below. Some Area II training agents are located outside of these counties but have working opportunities within these counties.

Please note, that you may be required to travel around Oregon and possibly to other states.
What working conditions can I expect?
Inside Electrician and Residential Electrician are rewarding careers involving various physical tasks. These include:
- Working Conditions: Electricians work both indoors and outdoors in diverse weather conditions.
- Physical Involvement: The job requires standing, bending, crawling, climbing, lifting, pulling, and reaching.
- Work Scenarios: They often operate in cramped spaces, or spaces that require the use of ladders and scaffolding reaching up to 160+ feet.
How do I receive my classroom instruction?
Your education journey will be centered at the Independent Electrical Training Center (IETC) in Salem, OR:
We are proud partners with Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) of Oregon and The Area II Inside Electrical Committee. Our affiliation with Chemeketa Community College allows apprentices to receive college credits toward an associate degree and potentially qualify for financial aid.
- Classroom Instruction: This takes place at IETC. Classes are conducted two evenings per week during fall, winter, and spring.
- Online Schooling: Available on a special basis.
Please note: You will not begin school until you have successfully registered into our program as an apprentice.
What costs can I expect?
Annual costs for related training and books are approximately $2000 annually. Please note that these expenses are typically handled by the apprentice, although there are some instances where employers may contribute towards these costs.
