Roseburg Inside Electrical Apprenticeship Program

The Area IV Inside Electrical apprenticeship program is a 4-year program designed to provide students with the experience and training necessary to become licensed general journeyman (inside) electricians. It is a combination of online plus in-person lab instruction and supervised work experience with approved employers or training agents.

Inside electricians perform installations, construction, maintenance, repairs, and service on electrical systems. This includes installing conduits, wiring lighting, switches, converters, and complex computerized systems, maintaining and repairing large motors, and inspecting electrical components like circuit breakers and transformers.  Electrical construction projects range from single-family homes to state-of-the-art industrial plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Entry-level apprentices earn a minimum of $16.80 to start and receive pay increases as they progress through the program. After one year (1,800 hours) in the program, pay increases to $23.10 per hour. On average, a licensed inside electrician earns around $42.00 an hour, or about $87,360 per year.

Apprentices work under the direct supervision of licensed journey worker electricians. After you are registered as an apprentice, you will work for an employer who has been approved by the Area IV Inside Electrical committee to be a training agent through the Bureau of Labor & Industries. Training agents have promised to provide on-the-job training and supervision according to approved industry standards.

Area IV employers have offices located in Douglas County east of the Coast Range in Oregon. However, you may be required to travel all over Oregon and to other states for work.

Electricians work both inside and outside in a variety of weather conditions. The work requires standing, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, pulling, and reaching in cramped spaces and on ladders and scaffolding ranging up to 160+ feet.

Classroom instruction – or related training – is conducted by the Independent Electrical Training Center (IETC) in Salem, OR. IETC is operated in partnership with IEC of Oregon and the Area IV Inside Electrical committee. Classes are two evenings a week and completed online in the fall, winter, and spring. Hands-on labs will be completed regularly in the Roseburg area. You will start school once you are registered in the program as an apprentice.

Related training tuition and books combined cost around $2,000 per year. This cost is the responsibility of the apprentice, although some employers do assist with expenses.

You will still need to complete the application process. However, if you are a veteran and have been honorably discharged within the last 24 months or are in the reserves with a DD214, you may qualify for an application submission exception during closed application periods. This program also qualifies for education benefits. Please contact the apprenticeship staff for more information.

All individuals interested in joining the apprenticeship program must complete the application process regardless of their current employment status.

Apprentices can only transfer between apprenticeship programs for the same license. Employment with a training agent registered with this program should be obtained prior to transferring programs. All previous experience (in and out of the apprenticeship program) will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. All transferring apprentices must be in good standing in their current program, provide documentation proving program minimum requirements, and provide documented OJT and related training experience.

Qualifying for the apprenticeship program is not a guarantee of employment or registration as an apprentice. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age to apply and at least 18 years of age to begin working as an apprentice.

Step 1: Gather the Required Documentation

1. Diploma or GED: Proof of a high school diploma, GED, or Associate Degree or higher.

2. National Career Readiness Certificate WorkKeys Assessment Scores:

  • Applied Math
  • Workplace Documents
  • Graphic Literacy

 

3. Algebra requirement: **WAIVED IF A SCORE OF 5 OR HIGHER IS RECEIVED ON WORKKEYS MATH ASSESMENT**
Proof of a C or better in Algebra OR College Math Placement test (Must test into Math 65/70)

4. Additional Documentation: Veterans – DD214

5. Optional Documentation: Pre-Apprenticeship Completion Certificate

Applications must be completed and submitted during published application openings. The required documentation must be uploaded to your application prior to submission.

An interview link will be emailed to applicants upon verification of Steps 1 and 2 by apprenticeship staff.

Applications will be scored after Step 3 is completed. Scores are based on WorkKeys test scores, and interview scores. Applicants are placed into one of three applicant group categories depending on their score. Opportunities will be provided to increase your score if you place into group two or three. Placement notification will be sent via email.

Applicants will become registered apprentices after obtaining an employment offer from a registered training company and completing the registration paperwork. IEC Oregon staff are unable to estimate or guarantee program registration.
